HEALTH CONCERNS

Leptospirosis – Transmitted through rodent and pig contaminated waters

Dengue – transmitted by mosquitoes, breeds in sitting water

Coliform  and E. coli bacteria – from contaminated water systems, cesspools

  • Symptoms include stomach ache, fever, vomiting if ingested
  • Avoid ingesting contaminated water; scrub external points of contact
  • Avoid mud and receded water areas

Gastrointestinal illness

  • Wear boots or covered shoes; avoid slippers and open toed footwear

Harmful chemicals

  • Farmers and ranchers especially should be beware pesticides, fertilizers, hazardous waste, oils ,livestock waste and other potential harmful chemicals (Agrisafe)

Infected wounds

  • Clean and cover open wounds; use waterproof bandage, when possible
  • Seek medical attention if red, swelling or oozing
  • Emergency wound care (PDF)

Reporting

All residents are asked to report damage sustained as a result of the March Kona storms. This information will help the agencies assess and plan for a healthy, coordinated recovery.

However, it is not the same as filing an insurance claim or request for assistance. Please visit one of your community hubs  for assistance.
